What is the Pokémon GO CP Calculator?

The Pokémon GO CP Calculator is a specialized tool designed to help trainers predict the Combat Power (CP) of their Pokémon after an evolution. By inputting your Pokémon’s species and its current CP, the calculator provides an estimated CP range for its evolved form. This is crucial for strategic planning, resource management (like candies and stardust), and deciding which Pokémon are the best candidates for evolution. Making an informed choice can be the difference between a top-tier attacker for raids and a Pokémon that just takes up space. This tool is essential for anyone serious about building a powerful team for gym battles or PvP leagues.

Pokémon GO Evolution Formula and Explanation

While the precise in-game formula involves complex variables like a Pokémon’s hidden level and individual values (IVs), a reliable estimation can be made using a simpler, widely-accepted method. This calculator uses this estimation to predict the evolved CP.

The core formula is:

Estimated Evolved CP = Current CP * Evolution Multiplier

Each Pokémon species has a unique Evolution Multiplier. This multiplier is an average value derived from extensive data collection from thousands of evolutions. While the actual outcome has a slight random variance, this formula provides a very accurate range.

Variables Table

Variable Meaning Unit Typical Range
Current CP The Combat Power of your Pokémon before evolution. CP (Unitless) 10 – 5000+
Evolution Multiplier A species-specific factor that determines the CP increase. Unitless Ratio 1.1 – 11.0+
Estimated Evolved CP The predicted Combat Power of your Pokémon after evolution. CP (Unitless) Dependent on inputs

Practical Examples

Understanding the calculator is easier with real-world scenarios.

Example 1: Evolving a Magikarp

  • Input Pokémon: Magikarp
  • Input Current CP: 150
  • Calculation: Magikarp has a very high evolution multiplier (approx. 10.1 to 11.2). Using an average of 10.6, the calculation is 150 * 10.6.
  • Result: The calculator would predict an evolved Gyarados with a CP around 1590. This shows how a weak Pokémon can become incredibly strong, making it a great candidate for evolution.

Example 2: Evolving a Pidgey

  • Input Pokémon: Pidgey
  • Input Current CP: 300
  • Calculation: Pidgey has a more modest multiplier (approx. 1.9). The calculation is 300 * 1.9.
  • Result: The evolved Pidgeotto would have a CP of around 570. This is useful for completing “Evolve a Pokémon” tasks without using valuable candy on more important species.

How to Use This Pokémon GO CP Calculator

  1. Select Your Pokémon: Choose the Pokémon you intend to evolve from the dropdown list.
  2. Enter Current CP: Type the current CP of that Pokémon into the input field. Ensure it’s a number.
  3. Calculate: Click the “Calculate Evolved CP” button.
  4. Interpret the Results: The calculator will display a CP range (a minimum and a maximum) for the evolved Pokémon. This accounts for the slight randomness in the game’s formula. The chart will also update to give you a visual comparison. Check out our PVP stats list to see how your evolution might fare.

Key Factors That Affect Final CP

The final CP is influenced by more than just the base multiplier. Understanding these factors provides a deeper insight into the game’s mechanics.

  • Base Stats: Every Pokémon species has base values for Attack, Defense, and Stamina. These are the primary drivers of CP.
  • Individual Values (IVs): Every individual Pokémon has its own unique IVs (0-15 for each stat) on top of its base stats. A Pokémon with higher IVs will have a higher CP at the same level than one with lower IVs.
  • Pokémon Level: This is the most significant factor. As a Pokémon’s level increases (through power-ups), its CP increases based on a hidden “CP Multiplier” value.
  • Evolution Multiplier: The specific multiplier used for the evolution, as demonstrated by this calculator.
  • Weather Boost: Catching a Pokémon in its corresponding weather type can result in a higher starting level, and thus higher CP.
  • Mega Evolutions & Primal Reversions: These temporary forms provide a massive stat and CP boost in battle but are not permanent evolutions. More info on our Mega Evolution guide.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is this Pokémon GO CP calculator 100% accurate?
It provides a highly accurate estimate. Due to hidden variables like IVs and a slight random factor in the game’s code, the result is presented as a range. The actual evolved CP will almost always fall within this predicted range.
Do IVs (Attack, Defense, Stamina) affect the evolution CP?
Yes. A Pokémon with higher IVs has a higher CP to begin with, and that higher CP is then multiplied, resulting in a higher evolved CP. Our calculator accounts for this by providing a range.
Why isn’t my Pokémon on the list?
This calculator includes a selection of common Pokémon with single-stage evolutions for demonstration. The underlying logic can be applied to any Pokémon with a known evolution multiplier.
Does my Trainer Level affect the evolution CP?
Not directly. Your trainer level limits the maximum level (and thus maximum CP) you can power up a Pokémon to, but it does not change the outcome of the evolution itself. The evolution calculation is based on the Pokémon’s current CP, not your level. Find out more about max CP values.
Should I power up my Pokémon before evolving?
It makes no difference to the final CP. The stardust and candy cost to reach a certain CP is the same whether you power up before or after evolving. However, it’s often wiser to evolve first to ensure the evolved Pokémon has a desirable moveset before investing stardust.
What is Combat Power (CP)?
CP, or Combat Power, is a summary statistic in Pokémon GO that represents a Pokémon’s overall strength in battle. It is calculated from its Attack, Defense, and Stamina stats.
How do I find a Pokémon’s current CP?
You can see the CP of any Pokémon you’ve caught by viewing it in your Pokémon storage. The number is displayed prominently above the Pokémon’s model.
Why did my Eevee evolve into something I didn’t select?
Eevee’s evolutions are special. For the first time, you can guarantee Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon by nicknaming it Rainer, Sparky, or Pyro, respectively. After that, evolutions are random unless you use a special Lure Module. This calculator shows estimates for the Kanto evolutions. See our guide to Eevee evolutions for more details.
